Tech-support pop-up scam (“Your computer is infected”)
The “Microsoft/Apple security warning — call this number” popup
A full-screen pop-up (often with alarms) claims your computer is infected and tells you to call a number. The “technician” takes remote control and walks you into paying or moving money.
How it’s usually worded
- “** Windows Security Alert ** Your PC is blocked. Call Microsoft Support: 1-8XX-XXX-XXXX.”
- “Do not restart your computer or you may lose your files.”
- “Install AnyDesk so our technician can remove the virus.”
Red-flag signals
- A phone number in a virus warning
Real antivirus software never tells you to call a number.
- Remote-access install
AnyDesk/TeamViewer hands them your screen and your banking.
- “Don't turn it off”
Closing the tab fixes it — the panic line keeps you on the hook.
- Payment in gift cards / crypto
Any legit refund or fee never uses gift cards.
What to do
Don't call the number. Close the browser (force-quit if needed). Never install remote-access software for an unsolicited warning. Run your own antivirus.
