Scam pattern
Fake job offer & fake-check scam
“Deposit this check and buy equipment”
A remote “job” (often after a chat-only interview) sends you a check to deposit, then asks you to buy equipment or send part back. The check bounces days later and you're left owing the bank.
How it’s usually worded
- “Congratulations! You're hired after our quick chat interview.”
- “We'll send a check — deposit it and buy your work equipment from our vendor.”
- “Send the remaining balance back via Zelle/gift cards.”
Red-flag signals
- Hired too fast
Offer with no real interview, video call, or verifiable company.
- Deposit-and-forward
Any “deposit our check, send part back” is a fake-check scam.
- Buy from “our vendor”
You're steered to pay a specific party with irreversible methods.
- Personal account contact
Gmail addresses, chat-app-only comms, no real HR.
What to do
Never deposit a check from an employer and send money back — that's always a scam, and you're liable when it bounces. Verify the company independently and never pay to get a job.

FAQ
Why would a fake job send me a real-looking check?
Banks may make funds available before a check clears. When it bounces days later, the money you forwarded is gone and you owe the bank.
Is a chat-only interview a red flag?
Often yes. Be cautious when there's no video/phone interview, no verifiable company, and pressure to move money.
