“It's me — I'm in trouble and need money now, don't tell anyone”
A caller or text pretends to be a grandchild or relative in a crisis (arrest, accident, stuck abroad) and begs for money fast and quietly. AI voice cloning now makes the voice sound real.
How it’s usually worded
- “Grandma, it's me — I'm in jail and need bail money. Please don't tell mom.”
- “I was in an accident and my phone broke, this is my new number.”
- “A lawyer will call you — send the money by gift cards / wire right away.”
Red-flag signals
- Urgency + secrecy
“Don't tell anyone” isolates you from the people who'd spot the scam.
- New/unknown number
“I lost my phone” explains why it's not really your relative's number.
- Untraceable payment
Gift cards, wire, or crypto for “bail” or “a lawyer” is the tell.
- Cloned voice
A voice that sounds right no longer proves identity — verify another way.
What to do
Hang up and call your relative on their known number. Ask a question only they'd know. Never send money or gift cards on an urgent, secret request.
